Photos taken after a major snowstorm in Ithaca, NY that lasted all weekend and piled several feet of snow. Everything is hushed by the thickness of snow.

For the People, By the People...
Saturday, January 04, 2003
Came across the Public Internet Project website. Non-profit organisation that seeks to promote 802.11b WiFi access to diverse communities. They conducted extensive research in Manhattan, beginning with the task of driving “every street in the borough of Manhattan (approx. 98%) with the exception of areas that were closed to vehicle traffic due to police or construction (WTC and Wall Street).”
Be sure to check out the map of WiFi access points in Manhattan at publicinternetproject.org
Among their goals:
1. The development of Internet access in under-privileged communities.
2. Work to bring broadband wireless Internet to the organizations that server under-privileged communities
3. Advocate the benefits of wireless networking at every opportunity.
4. Lobby Internet providers to allow the controlled sharing of bandwidth* for the public good.
5. Lobby the manufactures of wireless Internet hardware to build in bandwidth sharing features* and access controls that can limit the amount of access the public gets with out compromising security.
6. Publish research, surveys, and analysis that helps further the understanding of digital divide issues and promotes the use of the Internet.

Geek's revenge

From Wired.com
(via VirtualR)
“A comical look at how the Recording Industry Association of America’s website keeps getting hacked - and how the RIAA, which is trying to stop the free sharing of digital music files online - doesn’t appear to understand the basics of website security.”
“ The RIAA site was hacked Monday for the sixth time in as many months, and this time hackers made it possible for anyone to post bogus RIAA press releases on the site. Among the press releases posted, some touted “the joys of cheese and interspecies romantic relationships. Wired says the RIAA’s active opposition to digital music piracy “makes it an obvious target for those who are angered by what they see as the organization’s overly vehement crusade for copyright owners’ rights.” Wall Street systems administrator Anthony Negil says it is “obvious” that the RIAA doesn’t “get the Web” and understand technology, noting that the hackers are exploiting holes that are “elementary security issues.”
